Twelve elementary schools in Adams County School District 50 were recognized Thursday by officials from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Colorado Department of Education for their efforts to increase healthy eating and physical activity. The schools all won silver or bronze awards through the HealthierUS School Challenge, which is part of Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” campaign.

A morning awards ceremony took place at Westminster Elementary, which earned a silver award through the program. Silver award winners receive $1,000 and bronze award winners receive $500 for their school food service program.

Across the country, about 6,515 schools, including 65 in Colorado, have been certified as bronze, silver, gold or gold award of distinction winners since the challenge began in 2004.
